Professional Photography: Art In The Home
I preach "Print your pictures" all the time, everywhere. It is so important that you have a tangible copy of the images that you love. Cell phones die. Computers die. Storage media quickly becomes out of date or dies. Technology is great, but it is tenuous. Printed images last a long time though. I have pictures of my grandmother as a child in a montage in my dining room where I walk by it multiple times a day. There are pictures of my mother and father, pictures of my nieces, and pictures of family homes long gone. In my bathroom are small frames that are changed out often. Yes, it's kind of a weird place for pictures, but let's face it, we spend a lot of time in that room. It's a comfort to look over while brushing my teeth and see silly pictures of those I love.
Psychologists have long understood the connection between printed family photos and good mental health. For almost 40 years now they have studied the effect of photography in therapy and the results are clear. Children that grow up with family photos around the house show a marked difference in self-esteem and confidence.
You can put photographs in every room. There is no right or wrong way to display your beautiful images. It all comes down to personal preference. Images can be printed on photographic paper or art paper and framed. They also can be printed on canvas or metal. Metal prints are perfect for high humidity areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Canvas is stunning and comes in many forms, from traditional thick wrapped mounts to thin mount floats. There are, of course, a zillion different framing options, so you are sure to find something to fit your decorating style.
Scale is important when you are deciding what images and where to display them. The image below shows the same picture as a large canvas and as a framed 8x10. Which one do you notice first? This is the photographer version of the "Where's Waldo?" game. Those small gift print sizes are perfect for a desk top, but get lost in a large room.
Conversely, in close quarters a large canvas would be overwhelming. Smaller sizes are perfect for running up a staircase or clustering together in the bathroom. These 12" canvases are super fun running up the stair wall.
However you choose to display your art, get it up on the walls. Your children will thank you!
