I admit it. We are color and texture nerds over here. Yarn stores are my happy place. I have to coo over all the colors and pet everything. My niece and I just went to the local fiber fair and it was magnificent! I definitely found my tribe of people there. So many yarns and fleeces and crafted goods. There were spinning displays (an admirable skill that I don't have the patience for), weaving demonstrations (a nifty skill I picked up during the covid quarantines) and so many knitting needles and crochet hooks. It was glorious! I also learned to dye wool during the covid shutdowns, so I now dye most of the yarns I use in-house. But I couldn't leave the fair empty-handed. And because I am a baby photographer I came home with goodies to turn into props. As one does. HA!
The red fluff is roving mixed with silk scraps. It is so vibrant and interesting to look at. I'm not sure exactly what we will do with it, but I loved that it was so colorful. The purple yarn is wool mixed with sari silk scraps. I've never knitted with silk before, so this should be interesting. The blue-green is stunning in real life. I'm pondering what to do with it as well. A layer or scarf maybe. We'll see.
All of this yummy color and texture came into play with my last newborn session. We had a beautiful chonk of a boy to play with. He was sweet and squishy and had a head full of hair. Such a love!
It is interesting to me to play around with layers to see how many different looks we can achieve. For the blue set we mainly changed where the round, blue, curly layer was located, and we deleted the blue/green yarn piece. Which do you prefer? I love the utter simplicity of the image on the right, but the dynamic diagonal on the left is nice. Either way, the baby is a cutie pie!
I bought this mosaic backdrop on a whim just because I liked it. It is a pretty dramatic piece though and I've never had a chance to use it before. This was the perfect opportunity. The curly layer softened the geometrics and was a nice textured juxtaposition for our wrapped baby. The top image used felted silk layers to look like leaves, while in the bottom image he is snuggled up in all that knitted goodness. The sleepy cap and wrap are knitted with a yarn called Malabrigo Rios. I LOVE the play of color that they achieve with their dyes. So much depth to the color.
Normally moms choose which looks they want, but this time we had dad pick between two moon backdrops. Dad chose well and these turned out so sweet. Is there anything sweeter than a yawning baby?
While I love using color with babies, for parents I generally like to put them in darker tones so that baby really pops out in the pictures. Here mom is wearing a gown from my client closet and dad is wearing a plain black tee shirt. It works so well for family pictures.
Baby B was a dream baby and slept like a champ. He let me play with some new looks. I love his sweetness and love how our session turned out.
