Preparing for your child’s first photoshoot doesn’t have to be stressful. Whether you’re bringing a sleepy newborn, a curious six-month-old, or a busy toddler, a little planning goes a long way toward creating beautiful, natural portraits. Here’s everything you need to know before your session.

You’ve booked the session, now what? Don’t worry. Preparing for your child’s first photoshoot is easier than you think!
I get it. First-time parents often feel nervous about bringing their little one to a photo session. Will they cry? What if they won’t smile? What if the day feels chaotic?
Here’s what I’ve learned after years of photographing sweet families in Nashville. The most beautiful sessions happen when parents feel prepared and at ease.
This post will help you get ready for a joyful, relaxed photoshoot. We’ll cover simple tips that make all the difference. By the end, you’ll feel excited about capturing those precious memories of your little one.
The goal isn’t just beautiful photos. It’s about creating a warm experience filled with giggles and snuggles. It’s about celebrating this sweet chapter of your family’s story.
When you’re prepared, something wonderful happens. The whole experience becomes about joy instead of worry.
I’ve watched this happen so many times. Prepared families walk into my studio with bright smiles. Their children feel the calm energy. Everyone relaxes. And that’s when the real magic happens.
A relaxed child gives you those precious, natural moments. The sleepy newborn stretches. The toddler giggles at peek-a-boo. The older child shows off their silly dance moves.
When you’re not stressed about what to bring or wear, you can focus on what matters. You can soak in these fleeting moments with your little one.
Here’s what preparation gives you:
Trust me, when everyone feels comfortable and happy, that warmth shines through in every single photo.

Timing is everything when it comes to photographing your precious little one.
For newborns, those first two weeks are pure gold. Your baby is still sleepy and curled up like they were in the womb. They’re easier to pose, and we get those dreamy, peaceful shots that melt your heart. Did you miss that window? No worries! We will still make beautiful images of your baby.
Toddlers are a different story, and I love their spirited energy! The sweet spot is right after their nap when they’re well-rested and happy. A fed, rested toddler is a cooperative toddler. In all fairness, I am a lot more cooperative when I am rested and fed too.
Here’s my favorite tip: think about when your child is naturally at their best. Are they brightest in the morning? Do they get cranky before lunch? Are they all smiles after their afternoon snack?
The best time to book is when your baby is in their sweet spot. Usually after naps and feedings. You’ll thank me later when they’re all smiles and coos!
I always tell Nashville families to pick a time that works for their child’s routine. Not the photographer’s schedule. Your little one’s happiness comes first, and that’s when we capture the most beautiful, natural moments together.

Here’s the truth about dressing your little one for photos. Comfort beats everything else.
I’ve learned this from watching hundreds of sweet children over the years. When they feel good in their clothes, their personalities shine. When they’re uncomfortable, you can see it in every photo.
Choose simple, classic clothes that fit your child well. Think soft fabrics that feel good against their skin. Avoid anything that’s too tight, too scratchy, or too fussy.
Solid colors work beautifully for photos. They keep the focus on your child’s sweet face and expressions. Skip the big logos or busy patterns that pull attention away from those precious smiles.
Here’s my go-to advice: if your little one gets a bit fussy in the outfit, we’ll roll with it and make the most of it or we change into something else! I have an extensive client closet and always bring backup outfits with me that I know will photograph beautifully.
For newborns, don’t worry too much. I will have a ton of cute knit outfits, soft blankets and simple wraps that feel gentle on their delicate skin.
For toddlers, if they are picky about their clothes, it can help to choose something they’ve worn before and feel happy in. New clothes can feel strange and make them cranky. Comfort equals cooperation, and cooperation equals those joyful photos you’ll treasure forever. I will also bring a selection of outfits that I know will photograph well, so we are covered on all bases!

Nothing makes my heart happier than watching a nervous little one light up when they see their favorite bunny or blankie.
Familiar items are like a warm hug for your child. They bring a piece of home to our session, and that comfort shows in every photo.
For your sweet baby, think about what soothes them at home. Their special blanket that smells like mom. The soft toy they sleep with. Even a pacifier can work wonders for a fussy moment.
Toddlers especially love having their favorite things nearby. That beloved stuffed animal or the toy car they carry everywhere can be the difference between tears and giggles.
Here’s what I always tell families: it’s all about comfort! A familiar item, like their favorite bunny or blankie, can make all the difference in making them feel at home during the shoot.
Don’t worry about these items looking perfect or matching your outfit. Some of the most precious photos I’ve captured include a well-loved teddy bear or a tattered blanket. These items tell your family’s story.
Sometimes the comfort item even becomes part of the photo magic. I’ve taken beautiful shots of tiny hands clutching a special toy, or sleepy babies snuggled with their favorite blanket. These details add so much heart to your family’s memories.
If your child is old enough for snacks, bringing a few favorites can make your photo session much more enjoyable. A quick snack break can help boost energy, improve moods, and give little ones a chance to recharge before the next set of portraits. Choose snacks that are easy to eat and won’t stain clothing or leave colorful residue around little mouths and fingers. Dry cereal, crackers, puffs, or sliced fruit are all great choices. A happy, well-fed child is much more likely to relax, play, and let their personality shine during their photoshoot.
Accidents happen, especially when babies and toddlers are involved! Packing an extra outfit or two can save the day if there’s a diaper leak, spit-up, spilled snack, or unexpected playground adventure before your session. Even if you’re planning to use pieces from the Brown Bunny Photography client closet, having a backup outfit gives everyone a little extra peace of mind. The less you have to worry about life’s little surprises, the easier it is to relax and enjoy your child’s first photoshoot.
I strongly encourage you to leave your child in play clothes until you reach the studio. We have bathrooms for changing and time to spare. Kids have a sixth sense about when you want them to stay tidy and will somehow manage to get unidentifiable goo all over the nice outfit if you dress them at home.

Here’s something I want every parent to know: breaks are not just okay, they’re wonderful.
Children have their own rhythm, and I’ve learned to dance to their beat. When a little one needs a moment to recharge, we pause. When they need a snack or a cuddle with mom, we take our time.
Some of my most treasured photos happen right after a break. That’s when you see the real smiles return. The genuine giggles. The sweet, sleepy contentment.
Newborns especially need time for feeding and soothing. We’ll work around their schedule completely. If they need to eat, we’ll wait. If they need a diaper change, no problem. If they just want to be held, that’s perfect too.
For toddlers, breaks can be the best part of the session. We might have a little snack together. Or play peek-a-boo. Sometimes they just need a few minutes to explore and get comfortable with me.
Here’s my promise to every family: we’ll take breaks when needed, especially with newborns or toddlers. The best smiles come when everyone is relaxed!
I never rush a session. Your child’s comfort and happiness matter more than any timeline. When we go slow and gentle, we capture those natural, joyful moments that become your most cherished family photos.

Let me tell you a secret: some of my favorite photos are the ones that didn’t go according to plan.
The toddler who decided to give their baby brother a very wet kiss. The newborn who had a blowout right during a family shot. The little girl who wanted to show me her dance moves instead of sitting still.
These real moments tell your family’s true story. They capture your child’s personality in ways that posed photos never could.
I love when families let their guard down and just enjoy being together. When mom laughs at the chaos instead of stressing. When dad joins in the silliness. When big sister makes funny faces to get baby to smile.
Sometimes the best moments are the unexpected ones. Like when your toddler decides they want to share their snack with everyone in the room! Or when they spot new toys in the room and their whole face lights up.
Don’t worry if your little one gets a bit messy or silly. Those authentic expressions and genuine emotions often become the most treasured photographs—the ones that make you smile years later because they perfectly capture who your child was at this stage of childhood.
Missing front teeth? Bedhead? We can absolutely roll with it. A serious little thinker? Some of my favorite child portraits capture those quiet, thoughtful expressions. A shy child? We’ll slow things down, let them explore, and photograph them at their own pace. Got a wild child who loves to run, dance, and giggle? I’m all in! Some of the most joyful images come from embracing your child’s unique personality instead of asking them to be someone they’re not.
Every child is wonderfully different, and that’s exactly what I want to celebrate. My goal isn’t to create perfect poses—it’s to create timeless artwork that captures your child’s real smile, curious spirit, quiet moments, and the little quirks you’ll never want to forget.
I’m here to capture your family as you really are. Happy, loving, and perfectly imperfect. Because that’s what makes your story so beautiful and uniquely yours.

A typical milestone session lasts about 1 to 2 hours, but we always follow your child’s lead. If your little one needs extra time to warm up, we’ll take it. If they’re having the best day ever and want to keep going, we can do that too.
With newborns, I plan for plenty of time. Babies need to eat, sleep, and be soothed. We work around their natural rhythm, not against it. I allow up to four hours for newborn sessions so that we have plenty of time to keep baby happy.
For toddlers, some days they’re ready to shine right away. Other days they need a few minutes to get comfortable with me. Both are perfectly normal and wonderful.
Yes! I love including the whole family in your session. Big brothers and sisters make photos so much more joyful. And pets? They’re family too!
Grandparents often add such sweetness to family photos. There’s something so precious about watching grandma hold her new grandbaby or seeing grandpa make silly faces to get giggles.
We’ll make sure everyone feels comfortable and included. Sometimes the best shots happen when the whole family is just being themselves together.
Don’t stress about this for even a second. Children have their own rhythm, and I’ve learned to work with it, not against it.
If your little one is having a tough day, we’ll take breaks. We’ll play. We’ll let them explore. Sometimes I’ll put my camera down and just spend time getting to know them.
I’ve photographed enough children to know that cooperation looks different for everyone. Some kids love the camera right away. Others need time to trust me. Both types give us beautiful, authentic photos.
I provide lots of beautiful props, blankets, and backdrops for our session. But I also love when families bring something special from home.
That heirloom blanket from grandma. The tiny shoes you bought before baby was born. The stuffed animal that’s been waiting for their arrival. These personal touches make your photos even more meaningful.
Feel free to bring anything that tells your family’s story. These details add so much heart to your memories.
If your child gets upset, don’t worry. We’ll slow down, sit on the floor, play for a while, and wait until everyone feels comfortable again. My sessions are intentionally relaxed because children do their best when they don’t feel rushed.
Truthfully, kids usually like me. I tend to give off strong “favorite aunt” energy, and before long we’re playing with new toys, blowing bubbles, telling silly jokes, or celebrating with the occasional lollipop. Most children quickly forget they’re even having their pictures taken.
A full child portrait session is never about rushing from one pose to the next. It’s about spending an hour together, playing, laughing, and following your child’s lead. That’s when genuine smiles appear, personalities shine, and the most meaningful photographs are created.

Childhood moves faster than any of us expect. One day you’ll look back at these photographs and remember the tiny fingers wrapped around yours, the belly laughs, the missing front teeth, the favorite stuffed bunny that went everywhere, and the way they looked at you before they could find the words to say “I love you.”
My hope is that your child’s first photoshoot feels less like a formal appointment and more like spending time with your favorite aunt—someone who knows how to keep things relaxed while creating artwork your family will treasure for generations.
When you’re ready, I’d love to help tell your family’s story.
