You’re already making what feels like a thousand decisions before your baby even arrives. Choosing a pediatrician. Packing a hospital bag. Washing tiny sleepers. Wondering if you’ll ever sleep again. How to plan your newborn photography session shouldn’t add to that mental load.
Whether you’re looking for a Nashville baby photographer or a Franklin baby photographer, a little planning now means one less thing to think about once your little one is here. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know—from when to book your newborn session to how to choose a photographer and what to expect on the day of your session.
My goal is simple: to help you feel calm, confident, and excited about preserving these fleeting first days.

One of the most common questions I hear is:
“Should I wait until my baby is born before booking?”
The short answer is no.
The best time to book your newborn photography session is during your second trimester, ideally between 20 and 30 weeks of pregnancy.
It may feel early, but experienced newborn photographers often book months in advance. Reserving your session while you’re still pregnant gives you the best chance of securing a spot around your due date.
Don’t worry—you aren’t scheduling an exact day.
Instead, your due date simply holds space on the calendar. Once your baby arrives, we’ll choose the perfect session date together.

One of the greatest gifts you can give your future self is crossing newborn photography off your to-do list before your baby arrives.
Once you’re home with a newborn, your days revolve around feedings, diaper changes, naps, and soaking in those precious moments together. Trying to research photographers during those first sleep-deprived weeks can feel overwhelming.
Booking ahead means you’ll already know:
Instead of worrying about logistics, you’ll simply send a quick message letting me know your little one has made their grand entrance.

Most posed newborn photography sessions take place when babies are between 5 and 14 days old.
During this stage, newborns are often:
These tiny details—the curled fingers, wrinkly toes, flaky skin, fuzzy shoulders, and sleepy stretches—change surprisingly quickly.
Capturing them while they’re still brand new allows us to preserve this once-in-a-lifetime season exactly as it was.
That said, every baby is different.
If your little one arrives early, spends time in the NICU, or simply isn’t photographed during those first two weeks, don’t panic. Beautiful portraits can absolutely still be created. Safety, comfort, and your baby’s needs will always guide the session.

Choosing a newborn photographer is about much more than beautiful images.
You’ll be trusting someone to safely handle your brand-new baby during one of the most emotional seasons of your life.
As you compare photographers, consider asking:
How many years have they photographed newborns?
An experienced photographer has learned how to soothe babies, recognize when a pose isn’t comfortable, and adjust each session to meet your baby’s needs.
Does the photographer use a baby-led approach?
Your baby’s comfort should always come before creating a particular image.
When you look through a photographer’s portfolio, do the images still feel timeless?
Choose artwork you’ll still love hanging in your home twenty years from now.
Will your photographs live on your phone—or on your walls?
Professional prints, handcrafted albums, and framed artwork help preserve your family’s story for generations.
Perhaps most importantly…
Do you feel comfortable with them?
New parents deserve someone who creates a calm, welcoming experience from beginning to end.

One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography is that parents have to figure everything out themselves.
A full-service newborn session should feel easy.
After reserving your session, we’ll begin planning together.
We’ll discuss:
Everything is designed around creating artwork that feels uniquely yours.

The good news?
Usually…almost nothing.
Beautiful newborn portraits focus on your baby’s tiny features rather than elaborate outfits.
Many photographers (myself included) provide professionally curated wraps, handmade knits, delicate bonnets, headbands, and carefully selected props.
This means you don’t need to spend your pregnancy shopping for photo outfits.
Simple is timeless.

Parents often worry more about their own clothing than their baby’s.
The best advice is surprisingly simple:
Choose soft, neutral colors with minimal patterns.
Creams, warm whites, soft grays, oatmeal, muted greens, dusty blues, and earthy tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus where it belongs—on your connection with your baby. Moms are welcome to use gowns from my client closet. Dads are encouraged to wear a solid color shirt- often a black or white tee shirt will do.
Comfort matters, too.
The most meaningful images come from cuddles, gentle kisses, tiny fingers wrapped around yours, and quiet moments together—not perfectly coordinated outfits.

Older brothers and sisters often become the stars of the session in the sweetest ways.
A little preparation goes a long way.
Talk about the session ahead of time.
Keep expectations relaxed.
Bring a favorite snack or small reward.
Most importantly, choose a photographer who understands children.
Little ones don’t need to sit perfectly still to create beautiful memories. Sometimes the biggest smiles happen during the playful moments in between.

Nope!
Your due date reserves your place on the calendar.
Not at all.
While sleepy images are wonderful, awake portraits can be just as meaningful.
Absolutely not.
Your baby won’t remember how you looked.
One day they’ll treasure seeing how you looked at them.
Most professional newborn photographers provide everything needed for baby’s portraits.

That’s completely normal. Simply let your photographer know after delivery, and your session will be scheduled based on your baby’s arrival.
Babies cry.
Experienced newborn photographers build plenty of time into each session for feeding, soothing, diaper changes, and cuddles.
There is no rush.
Absolutely.
These early family portraits often become some of the most treasured images from the entire session.
When performed by an experienced photographer using a baby-led approach, newborn photography should always prioritize your baby’s comfort and safety above every pose or idea.
