Bringing home a new baby is one of life’s most exciting milestones, but it also comes with an endless list of decisions. Between choosing a pediatrician, setting up the nursery, and packing your hospital bag, it’s easy to wonder when you should schedule your newborn photography session or how to choose a newborn photographer.
The short answer? The best time to book your newborn photographer is during your second trimester or early in your third trimester.
Planning ahead gives you the best chance of reserving your preferred photographer while ensuring everything is ready when your little one arrives. Here’s everything you need to know about when to schedule your newborn photography session and why timing matters.

Many parents assume they should wait until their baby arrives before contacting a newborn photographer. In reality, most professional newborn photographers book months in advance.
When you reserve your session during pregnancy, your photographer will place your due date on their calendar and remain flexible as your baby’s arrival approaches. Since very few babies arrive on their actual due date, experienced newborn photographers build flexibility into their schedule to accommodate early and late arrivals.
Booking before your baby is born also gives you plenty of time to plan your session, choose colors and styling, and ask questions without feeling rushed during those busy first days of parenthood.

The ideal time for a newborn photography session is usually between 5 and 14 days after birth.
During these early days, newborns tend to sleep more deeply, naturally curl into the cozy poses they enjoyed in the womb, and are generally easier to soothe between setups. Their tiny fingers, wrinkly toes, flaky skin, and sleepy stretches are all part of this fleeting stage that changes remarkably quickly.
Every baby is different, though. Some little ones remain wonderfully sleepy beyond two weeks, while others become more alert much sooner. An experienced newborn photographer will always adapt the session to your baby’s personality and comfort.

Don’t panic!
One of the most common emails I receive begins with, “My baby is already a week old. Is it too late?”
Almost never.
While those first two weeks are ideal, beautiful newborn portraits can still be created after that window. Older newborns may spend more time awake and stretching, but those bright eyes, tiny expressions, and curious looks tell a beautiful story too.
The most important thing is documenting this season, even if your timeline didn’t go exactly as planned.

Babies love to keep us guessing.
If your little one decides to arrive weeks before your due date, don’t worry. When you book your newborn photography session before delivery, your reservation simply moves with your baby’s arrival.
For premature babies, we often schedule the session based on your baby’s health and your pediatrician’s recommendations rather than their birth date. Your baby’s comfort and well-being will always come first.
If your newborn spends time in the NICU, please know there is no pressure to keep your original photography timeline.
Your focus belongs entirely on your baby and your family.
Once your little one is home and everyone has had time to settle, we’ll choose the best time for your session together. While the photographs may look a little different than those taken in the first two weeks, they will be every bit as meaningful because they celebrate your family’s journey.

Absolutely.
Many families choose to reserve both their maternity photography session and newborn photography session at the same time. Not only does this guarantee availability, but it also allows us to create a beautiful collection of artwork that tells the beginning of your family’s story—from pregnancy through your baby’s first days.
Planning both sessions together also makes everything easier. We can coordinate colors, artwork, and the overall style so your portraits complement one another beautifully.

One of the biggest concerns parents have is, “What happens if my baby doesn’t arrive on time?”
The answer is simple—we adjust.
After you reserve your newborn photography session, we’ll use your due date as a placeholder on the calendar. Once your baby arrives, you’ll simply send me a quick message, and we’ll finalize the exact session date based on your baby’s birth and how everyone is feeling.
From there, I’ll guide you through every step of the process, including planning your session, choosing colors, selecting wardrobe options for family portraits, and answering any questions that come up along the way.
One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is removing one more thing from your to-do list before your baby arrives.
When your newborn photography session is already planned, you don’t have to spend those first sleep-deprived days researching photographers, comparing portfolios, or worrying about availability.
Instead, you can simply enjoy your baby, knowing everything has already been taken care of.
That’s exactly how I believe newborn photography should feel—calm, organized, and completely centered around your family.

The best time is during your second trimester or early in your third trimester. Booking early gives you the best chance of securing your preferred photographer around your due date.
Not at all. While the first two weeks are ideal, beautiful newborn portraits can still be created for older babies.
That’s completely normal. We reserve your session based on your estimated due date and adjust once your baby arrives.
Yes. Every baby is unique, and we’ll work with your family’s medical team and your baby’s needs to determine the best time for your newborn photography session.

Your newborn will never again be quite this tiny.
The sleepy stretches, delicate eyelashes, curled fingers, and peaceful little sighs change before most parents have had a chance to catch their breath.
My goal is to make preserving these memories wonderfully simple. From the moment you book until your finished artwork is hanging on your walls, I’ll guide you through every step so you can spend less time worrying about the details and more time soaking in these first precious days with your baby.
I would be honored to help tell the beginning of your family’s story.
